Stephanie Wildman has received the 2007 Great Teacher Award from the Society of American Law Teachers, the largest national organization of law school faculty. The award was presented recently at the SALT annual awards dinner in Washington, DC.
The SALT teaching award recognizes individuals or institutions that have made especially important contributions to teaching and legal education. During the presentation of this year’s award, Professor Wildman’s former students and colleagues cited her lifetime of outstanding teaching including her attention to individual students, her collaborative style, and her dedication to social justice issues. In addition to teaching, Professor Wildman serves as Director of the Santa Clara University School of Law’s Center for Social Justice and Public Service. Past recipients of the SALT award include Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Professors Derrick Bell and Sylvia Law.
Professor Wildman joined the Santa Clara University School of Law faculty in 2001 after having taught for 25years at the University of San Francisco School of Law where she is a professor emerita. She received her A.B with Honors in Humanities and her J.D. from Stanford University. She has been a visiting professor at the University of California, Berkeley School of Law, the University of California, Davis School of Law, the University of California, Hastings School of Law and Stanford Law School
She clerked for Judge Charles M. Merrill of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and worked as a staff attorney for California Rural Legal Assistance. In 1983 she was elected to membership in the American Law Institute.
Professor Wildman is past co-president of the Society of American Law Teachers and a former member of the Board of Governors. She is past chair of the Teaching Methods and Law and Community sections of the Association of American Law Schools. She was the Founding Director of the Center for Social Justice at Boalt. Professor Wildman serves on the Executive Committee of the Association of American Law Schools.
