Santa Clara University School of Law professor, Allen S. Hammond IV has been appointed as the Phil and Bobbie Sanfilippo Chair at Santa Clara University. The appointment to the Sanfilippo Chair is for five years.
Santa Clara University President, Paul Locatelli, S.J. said, in announcing the appointment, "The Sanfilippo Professorship is awarded to Professor Hammond because he has distinguished himself as a teaching scholar who fosters the highest ideals of a Catholic, Jesuit education. He embodies the qualities that we seek: creative scholarship with teaching, collegiality and collaboration with faculty and students, and incorporation of intellectual foundations for ethics and justice while also serving as a public intellectual. In addition, Geof Bowker, Dean Polden, Provost Gilbert and I appreciate his ethical and cross disciplinary work with the Center for Science, Technology and Society."
Professor Hammond is a graduate of Grinnell College (B.A., 1972), the School of Law (J.D., 1975) and the Annenberg School of Communications (M.A. 1977) at the University of Pennsylvania. His prior positions include: Attorney and Program Manager, Minority Telecommunications Development Program, NTIA (1977-79); General Counsel, WJLA-TV (1979-82); Lecturer, Howard University (1982-83); Visiting Associate Professor of Law at Syracuse University College of Law (1983-85); Senior Attorney, Media Access Project (1983-85); Senior Attorney, MCI Communications Corporation/Satellite Business Systems (1985-87); Assoc. General Counsel, MCI Communications Corp. (1988-89); and Director, New York Law School Communications Media Center, and Professor at New York Law School (1989-1997).
The late Phil Sanfilippo was an alumnus of Santa Clara University and served several years on the University Board of Trustees. He also was the second lay member to chair the Board of Trustees.
