Santa Clara Law students competed in the inaugural Villanova Esports Negotiation Competition on November 6 and 7 and won! Phillip Yin ’22, Tram Nguyen ’22, Michael Wang ’22 (HMCE Director), and Baldip Hothi ’23 represented Santa Clara Law in negotiating contracts for players in the Overwatch League. The team spent countless nights researching information regarding the various players and teams. Professor David Greenspan provided insightful feedback on the initial pitches and negotiations. After competing in three preliminary rounds and three knockout rounds, the team clinched the win.
“It was a very fruitful experience and a great way for law students to get a direct hands-on experience in negotiating contracts in a $900 million dollar industry,” according to Michael Wang ‘22. The new competition was added to the portfolio of the Honors Moot Court External (HMCE) competitions managed by Professor Mary Procaccio-Flowers and a student-run board.
There is strong interest in sports and esports law by students at Santa Clara Law. The school offers several courses (Entertainment Transactions, Sports Law) and two student organizations, the Sports and Entertainment Law Society and the Society for Interactive Entertainment and Gaming Law, which organize events and networking opportunities to further advance student knowledge and engagement in these areas of the law.
