Mr. Larry Johnson, recently named by United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan as UN Assistant Secretary-General for Legal Affairs is speaking at Santa Clara University School of Law on Monday and Tuesday, March 13 and 14.  The lectures are being sponsored by the School of Law’s Center for Global Law and Policy.

 

The topic of his lecture on March 13 is “Current Issues in the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia."  On Tuesday, March 14 Mr. Johnson will speak about “Current issues in the International Atomic Energy Agency.”  There will be a reception both days from 11:30 a.m.noon in the Levy Student Lounge in Bannan Hall.  Each lecture will run from noon1:00 p.m. with Monday’s lecture taking place in Bannan Hall, Room 135 and Tuesday’s lecture taking place in Bannan Hall, Room 127.

 

Mr. Johnson formerly served as the Legal Adviser of the International Atomic Energy Agency (1997-2001) and Chef de Cabinet, Office of the President of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (2003-2005). He joined the United Nations Secretariat in 1971 and last served at Headquarters in 1997.

 

Currently, Mr. Johnson is Professor of Global Affairs at New York University’s Center for Global Affairs and Visiting Professor of International Law at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University.  He begins his new position as UN Assistant Secretary-General for Legal Affairs on May 1.  Previously, Mr. Johnson was Visiting Professor of International Law at the University of California, Davis, School of Law and at the New England School of Law.

 

He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, the American Society of International Law and the Association of the Bar of the City of New York.

 

The 61-year old attorney graduated from the University of Nebraska (B.A.), Harvard Law School (J.D.) and the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University (M.P.A.).
