Ethics Editor, Volume 45, Santa Clara Law Review

Brad JoondephThe Santa Clara Law Review is pleased to announce the appointment of Associate Professor of Law Bradley Joondeph as faculty advisor.  Dean Donald J. Polden appointed Prof. Joondeph effective August 2004.  Professor Joondeph replaced longtime Law Review faculty advisor George Alexander, who retired in August 2004.

According to Dean Polden, “Professor Joondeph is an outstanding teacher and wonderful scholar.  He will provide leadership to our emerging scholars on the Law Review and he has a keen vision for the importance of an ambitious and independent forum for legal scholarship at Santa Clara’s law school.”

“The role of the faculty advisor is to provide assistance and advice to the Law Review and the students as they desire it,” Joondeph says.  He emphasizes that the Law Review is run, edited, organized, and managed entirely by law students on the Board of Editors.  As faculty advisor, Prof. Joondeph hopes to supplement the students’ experience by providing a broader perspective on substantive law and procedure and to facilitate interaction with authors.

Prof. Joondeph noted that participating in the Law Review is especially valuable for students because they learn by evaluating other writers’ work.  “Not only do students learn how to write well but how to articulate what it is that makes writing good,” Joondeph says.

In its 45th year, the Santa Clara Law Review (formerly the Santa Clara Lawyer) is a legal periodical edited and published by Santa Clara University law students, bringing prestige to the School of Law and its graduates.  The Law Review is committed to publishing four high-quality issues in a timely manner and creating a valuable source of legal information for students, professors, practitioners, and judges.  It provides students practical training in citation and academic experience in researching and writing their comments.

Prof. Joondeph received his B.A., with distinction and Phi Beta Kappa, from Stanford University and his J.D., with distinction, Order of the Coif, from Stanford University School of Law.  He was a Note Editor of the Stanford Law Review.

Following law school, he was a judicial clerk for Judge Deanell Reece Tacha, United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit (1994-1995).  Most recently, Prof. Joondeph served as clerk to United States Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor (October term 1999).

He has taught a range of courses at Santa Clara, Washington University of St. Louis, and Stanford law schools, including Constitutional Law I, Federal Personal Income Tax, State and Local Tax, Supreme Court Seminar, and Legal Research and Writing.

Prof. Joondeph is currently on leave, enjoying his time off with his wife and five-month-old son, Akhil.  He will be returning to campus full time in January 2005.
