Over 300 new students will be attending Santa Clara University School of Law’s Orientation August 8 – 13. The Orientation program includes a number of self-scheduled and required activities meant to introduce students to the campus, to the legal education, and the profession.
Students will begin the week by attending "Computer Camp" where they will sign on to the University’s network and e-mail systems, configure their laptops for wireless Internet access and be introduced to the E-Campus student information system.
The Wednesday evening Convocation will feature an official welcome to the school by Dean Polden and remarks by leading alumni including U.S. Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren, Mary Alexander the former President of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, and Rolanda Pierre-Dixon, creator of the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Domestic Violence unit. Professor Gerald Uelmen will add a historical perspective.
Another highlight of the week will be the Judges Lunch on Friday when Santa Clara’s alumni judges along with other prominent alumni will join the new students for a discussion of professionalism and legal ethics. They will lead informal discussions and share tales from their years of experience.
Students will also attend academic sessions where they will be given an overview of the legal system, learn how to read and brief cases, learn how legal education differs from their undergraduate experience, and meet some of their faculty. The week culminates with social activities sponsored by the Student Bar Association. A complete Orientation schedule is available on the Admissions Web page at www.scu.edu/law/admissions.
