Santa Clara Law’s Honors Moot Court External Team traveled to Brooklyn Law School for the Dean Jerome Prince Memorial Evidence Competition that was held April 8 -10, 2010. The competition honors the late Jerome Prince, renowned evidence scholar, teacher, and author of Prince on Evidence, who served as Dean of Brooklyn Law School from 1953-1971.

This year’s competition provided an opportunity for participants to write an appellate brief addressing an evidentiary issue in a contemporary context. The final round was presided over by United States Supreme Court Justice Samuel A. Alito, Jr.; United States Court of Appeals Judge M. Margaret McKeown, Ninth Circuit and New York State Court of Appeals Judge Victoria A. Graffeo.

Christine Cusick (2L), Corey Wallace (2L), and Adam Flores (3L) did a fantastic job writing a brief that received third place and made it to the final round in the evidence competition. Their performance in that final round was terrific and Justice Alito was very complimentary about their performance.

Professor Ellen Kreitzberg was the team’s coach and additional thanks goes to the Santa Clara faculty and staff who gave generously of their time to meet with these students and advise them on issues or moot them in practice rounds: Karin Carter, Seth Flagsberg, Kyle Graham, Paige Kaneb, Tyler Ochoa, Ed Steinman, and Jerry Uelmen. Special thanks to Professor Yvonne Ekern who not only accompanied the team to New York but worked with them before they left by providing insight into advocacy skills and performance that was invaluable. Thanks also to Alum Tommy Hartnett and Assistant District Attorney Lane Liroff who worked with the students.

Left to right: the Honorable Margaret McKeown (9th Circuit Court of Appeal), Corey Wallace, Christine Cusick, Justice Samuel Alito (United States Supreme Court), Adam Flores, and the Honorable Victoria A. Graffeo (New York State Court of Appeal).
