On February 28, 2005, law alumna, Nikki Pope ’04, was sworn in as a member of the California Bar by United States Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens in his chambers. Pope arranged the meeting with Justice Stevens by writing him and describing her ties to Chicago (where he practiced law for many years) and to Santa Clara University School of Law. Law School grad, Skip Paul ’75 was a law clerk for Justice Stevens and SCU Law Professor Ken Manaster worked closely with Justice Stevens on an investigation into corruption of Chicago judges. Professor Manaster published a book on the investigation, titled Illinois Justice: The Scandal of 1969 and the Rise of John Paul Stevens .
Pope, an attorney in the U.S. Department of Justice Antitrust Division, was obviously delighted at the opportunity to meet Justice Stevens and was especially pleased to have him administer the attorneys’ oath since this is something he does very infrequently.
