Elizabeth Powers joined Santa Clara University School of Law to serve as Assistant Dean for International and Comparative Law. She will play a critical role in directing the international law curriculum and programs, including working closely with the Director of the Institute for International and Comparative Law in supporting faculty and students in the law school’s twelve (12) summer international programs, counseling SCU law graduate and JD students regarding the school’s unique and ambitious programs for global legal studies, and advancing the work of the Institute.
Assistant Dean Powers returns to Santa Clara University School of Law after having served as Assistant Dean for Law and Technology from 2001-2003. She received her undergraduate, law and graduate business degrees from Santa Clara University.
Dean Donald J. Polden remarked “Given Elizabeth’s highly regarded work in directing and growing the high tech law program for several years, including the formation of the High Tech Law Institute, she brings considerable energy and administrative skill to this new position. Her knowledge of the culture, needs and ambitions of the law school will help us move our international program to a greater level of national, indeed international, recognition.”
Prior to her serving as assistant dean for law and technology, Assistant Dean Powers had extensive experience in the practice of law, including work in private practice at Latham & Watkins, Venture Law Group and Weil, Gotshal & Manges, as well as work as General Counsel for a start-up medical device company. She has been a lecturer at the School of law for the past eight years primarily teaching “Protection of Intellectual Property” based on a book she co-authored with now-retired School of Law faculty member, Howard Anawalt.
Assistant Dean Powers is a member of the Executive Committee of the State Bar of California Intellectual Property Section, and of Santa Clara University’s School of Law High Tech Advisory Board.
