Chief Justice Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye of the Supreme Court of California will deliver the commencement address to Santa Clara University School of Law’s Class of 2015.

The event will be held on Saturday, May 16 at 9:30 a.m. in the University’s Mission Gardens.

“I am pleased to offer some words of encouragement to the next generation of those who apply their legal training to serve the rule of law,” said Chief Justice Cantil-Sakauye. “I hope they let their values be their compass as they embark on their new career paths, acknowledge their parents, guardians, family, and friends that have helped them on this part of their journey, and appreciate that the future of access to justice in our civil society is in their hands.”

Chief Justice TaniCantil-SakauyeChief Justice Cantil-Sakauye is the 28th chief justice of the State of California, the first Asian-Filipina American, and the second woman to serve as the state’s chief justice.

“We are honored to welcome Chief Justice Cantil-Sakauye as our commencement speaker, and to award her an honorary degree of doctor of law,” said Santa Clara Law Dean Lisa Kloppenberg. “She possesses not only the wisdom of decades on the bench, but also the generosity of spirit that is such an integral part of a Santa Clara education.”

In February, the chief justice was honored by Santa Clara University School of Law for her ongoing efforts in advocating for the human and civil rights of minorities throughout California, including overseeing a pilot Domestic Violence Home Court, and as a board member of My Sister’s House, a domestic violence safe house for Asian and Pacific Islander women and children.

Born in Sacramento, Chief Justice Cantil-Sakauye earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Davis, graduating with honors after first attending Sacramento City College. She received her J.D. from UC Davis School of Law in 1984.
