We’re three weeks into the new academic year and things at HTLI are off to a great start. Our second Tech Edge JD class is twice the size of the first. Our High Tech Tuesday speaker series is becoming like Monday Night Football – we have some special editions that are not on Tuesday nor are the during the lunch hour.
HTLI Benefactors are collaborating with our students to bring some exciting programs and speakers to campus this fall. We hope to see you at as many of them as you can make. We haven’t scheduled any Breakfast Bytes yet, but it’s still early in the semester!

We are kicking off a new season of the popular AI for Social Impact speaker series with a conversation about using facial recognition software as a surveillance tool. Working with the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics, we will continue to bring you informative discussions about issues facing Silicon Valley lawyers, businesses, and policymakers with the IT, Ethics and Law lecture series.

Without Precedent
HTLI is sponsoring a new monthly podcast series hosted by Professor Eli Edwards and Nikki Pope, HTLI’s Managing Director. The September episode discusses CalBar’s initiative to promote access to legal services to underserved communities through technology innovations. Future episodes will discuss using virtual reality in legal training and education, the impact of technology in the criminal justice system, biometric identification, and privacy, among other things. If you have an idea for a topic, tell us what it is.
Technology and Justice
Last year’s Empathy Hackathon, a collaboration with the Leavey School of Business, was so successful, Professors Colleen Chien and Laura Norris have organized the Second Annual 2nd Chances Empathy Hackathon. The goal of the hackathon is to help people with a criminal record get the second chance they’ve earned by closing the gap between eligibility and delivery of second chances opportunities like record expungement or regaining the right to vote. You can help fix our criminal justice system by participating in the hackathon, by sponsoring the hackathon, or by partnering with the hackathon. HTLI is partnering with The Ignatian Center for Jesuit Education to present Predicting Justice: Optimizing Data in the Criminal Justice System, a one-day symposium that brings together academics, judges, defense attorneys, prosecutors, legislators, and policymakers for a comprehensive discussion about how technology and data are being used in our criminal justice system. The High Tech Law Journal will publish a special issue on predictive justice.
