If you’re interested in a career in privacy law, you might consider obtaining a certification from the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP). Employers looking for privacy experts are quite interested in candidates with the certification, so obtaining a certification could boost your job search for this summer. Furthermore, IAPP certification is required to complete the Privacy Law Certificate.
(You can learn more about IAPP certification fromhttps://privacyassociation.org/certify/cipp/ You can learn more about the Privacy Law Certificate from this primer: http://lawscuedustage.wpengine.com/wp-content/uploads/Introducing-Santa-Clara-Law-Privacy-Certificate.pdf).
IAPP certification requires passing an exam. We will be administering an IAPP certification exam on campus on January 6, 2015. You can sign up for this exam administration by emailing Dorice Kunis (dkunis@scu.edu) the following information no later than Nov. 21 at noon: (1) your name, (2) your preferred email address, (3) which certification exam you’d like to take (we recommend CIPP/US), and (4) a confirmation that you have joined the IAPP as a student member (cost: $50/yr). You can obtain your IAPP student membership at https://privacyassociation.org/join/ To prepare for successfully passing the exam, we recommend that you buy two of the IAPP’s test prep books ($65/each) and watch a 20 hour video of their test prep course that they will provide to students for free. Reading the books and watching the video might be a productive thing to do during your winter break.
If you have any questions about the IAPP certification exam, the Privacy Law Certificate or a career in privacy, feel free to contact Prof. Goldman. We’ll also have an information session about the certificate in Spring semester.
