Julie Saffren practiced Family Law in Santa Clara County, with a focus on domestic violence issues, for more than fifteen years. A former staff attorney at Support Network for Battered Women, she practiced at the firms of Schlepphorst & Emede and Hoge, Fenton, Jones & Appel in San Jose. In her legal career, she trained attorneys, judges and mental health professionals on DV issues locally and statewide. She also served as ethics counsel at Law Foundation of Silicon Valley. She was a member and past chairperson of the Santa Clara County Domestic Violence Council, and a former member of FLEXCOM, the Executive Committee of the State Bar’s Family Law section. She was an Editor of the State Bar’s Family Law News. In 2009, she co-authored a domestic violence appeal, In re Marriage of Nadkarni. The published case expanded the construction of California’s Domestic Violence Prevention Act by establishing a legal definition for conduct that “disturbs the peace” under Family Code section 6320. She is currently associate editor of the Domestic Violence Report, a national newsletter published by the Civics Research Institute.
