Avanindar Singh

Avanindar (Avi) Singh is a Deputy Public Defender in San Jose. Avi started his career in 2009 as a misdemeanor trial attorney. Since then, he worked as a research attorney handling Fourth Amendment issues for two years. He supervised law students through the Public Defender’s Post Bar and Research Clerkship Programs. He established a program for law students to litigate pretrial release motions after the Humphrey decision. He provided in-court mentorship to new trial attorneys as a Lead for the Misdemeanor Unit. Avi has been assigned to the Felony Trial Team three times. Avi is from the Bay Area. He discusses the criminal justice system on a podcast called Aider & Abettor. Together with his colleague, Sajid Khan, he published “A Public Defender Definition of Progressive Prosecution” in the Stanford Journal of Civil Rights and Civil Liberties. For six years, Avi volunteered as a high school mock trial coach. He has participated as a volunteer at law school trial advocacy workshops since 2011.
