On Monday, California Governor Jerry Brown signed two very important bills to help protect innocent people from wrongful conviction and make sure that those who have been wrongly convicted receive access to compensation.
SB 618 authored by CA State Senator Mark Leno and sponsored by NCIP, CIP, and the ACLU streamlines the process for exonerees to receive compensation for the time served due to their wrongful conviction.
SB 569 requires police to videotape any interrogations of suspects being held for murder under the age of 18 in an effort prevent false confessions. NCIP’s Paige Kaneb testified in Sacramento in support of this legislation.
These laws are a great step in the right direction for criminal justice reform and a great win for all involved!
