This Unique Mediation Training brings together law students and professionals in business, health care, human resources, mediation and law to expand their understanding of conflict and develop the skills and self-awareness necessary to mediate effectively. This highly interactive and experiential program meets the 40-hour training requirements of most courts and many community mediation programs. Topics include:
- Understanding and managing conflict
- Negotiation basics
- Key communication skills, including empathic listening
- Mediation ethics and decision making
- Facilitating case evaluation, including the role of law and lawyers
- Application of social and neuro sciences to conflict and negotiation
- Self-awareness and self-reflection
- Implicit bias and cross-cultural competence
- Special issues: grief, apology and forgiveness
- Representing clients in mediation
- Professional development – reflective practice and the business of mediation
Tuition: $1,995; $1,695, gov/non-profit; $100 discount 30 days before program (not available to gov/non-profit)
Tuition, due at registration, is fully refundable, minus $300 cancellation fee, up to two weeks before the course begins.
Faculty:
Dana Curtis has trained hundreds of mediators training for organizations, courts, and law schools throughout the U.S. and internationally, including at Stanford Law School for 10 years, and Harvard Law School’s Program on Negotiation, for the past six years. Her mediation practice focuses on high conflict business, employment, probate, and estate disputes. Dana writes about mediation, including as co-author of Appellate Mediation: A Guidebook for Attorneys and Mediators (ABA 2016). She served four years as a Circuit Mediator for the 9th Circuit and has been recognized as a “Top 50” California neutral. She is Director of Santa Clara’s Conflict Resolution Program..
