American society and its legal systems and institutions have been rocked in recent times over claims of discrimination and disparate treatment in courts, law organizations and by public safety agencies. Many of those claims have proven to be complicated, but true and accurate. Systemic racism and bias and episodic acts of xenophobia and hatred have forced lawyers and judges to examine our legal institutions, including ones that they lead. Further, the COVID pandemic and its impact on many legal institutions have added to the contemporary challenges to these institutions and, indeed, to the advancement of the Rule of Law.
The Judge William Ingram Inn of Court and the Inns of the American Inns of Court are committed to the advancement of the Rule of Law and its Professional Creed affirms that “throughout history, lawyers and judges have preserved, protected and defended the Rule of Law in order to ensure justice for all.” The commitment to the Rule of Law by lawyers and judges is being tested in many communities and in many ways.
This year’s Symposium, which honors the memory of an outstanding jurist known for his civility and unflinching commitment to fair treatment of lawyers, jurors and litigants, will offer the viewpoints of leading experts on many issues of social justice and systemic injustice in the courts, legal profession and in our communities.

Judge William A. Ingram and the Inn of Court
Judge William A. Ingram served as a Judge of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California for twenty-six years, including three years as its Chief Judge. The William A. Ingram Inn of Court, which draws its pupils from Stanford, Santa Clara and Lincoln Law Schools, was renamed to honor Judge Ingram, one of the Inn’s founders, and Judge Ingram’s family designated the Inn to receive memorial contributions to endow this Memorial Symposium.
Judge Ingram was a mentor to many lawyers and judges in our community, and the Inn and this symposium seek to promote the ideals of civility, collegiality, and professionalism that he personified.
