Santa Clara Law is proud to present the Social Justice and Human Rights Award for 2019 to Honorable Shelyna V. Brown JD ’96. Judge Brown received her BA from UC Davis and her JD from Santa Clara Law. Judge Brown is a sought after speaker, serves on several boards and has been recognized for her excellence in advocacy, and praised for her contribution to the community. In 2009, she was honored by her office as the Trial Attorney of the year. In 2010, she was honored by the 100 Black Women of Silicon Valley for her Excellence in Advocacy. In 2011, Judge Brown was honored by the Silicon Valley Business Journal as one of 100 Women of Influence in Silicon Valley. Also in 2011, Judge Brown received a Congressional Commendation from Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren for her work and commitment to her community. In 2012, Judge Brown was awarded the Unsung Heroes award, by the Santa Clara County Bar Association. Most recently, Judge Brown was appointed by the Governor, to serve as one the youngest judges on the Santa Clara County Superior Court. Judge Brown endeavors to continue to serve her community in her new capacity, as a Superior Court Judge.

This year the Organization of the Year award will be given to the Law Foundation of Silicon Valley. The Law Foundation uses innovative legal advocacy as a tool for social change. The organization crafts inventive solutions to the life-changing legal issues facing low-income families and individuals in Santa Clara County. The Law Foundation’s attorneys, social workers, community workers, advocates, and pro bono volunteers advance the rights of more than 10,000 individuals and families each year through legal services, strategic advocacy, and educational outreach, with a focus on three key issue areas: housing, health, and children & youth. The majority of the people the Law Foundation serves live below 125% of federal poverty guidelines, which stands under $25,000 annually for a household of four, and their legal services are free of charge.
