Course Description:
The seminar on Corporate Social Responsibility introduces students to concerns relating to the conduct of corporations worldwide and the different approaches proposed for integrating beneficial policies into transnational and national business operations. Students will examine the impact of corporate activity on a broad spectrum of stakeholders, including humans, animals, and the environment. The course will evaluate international, national, and subnational efforts to promote corporate responsibility. Among other topics, students will examine the international norms established by the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, aspirational solutions through international bodies such as the trade organizations, national dialog as expressed through Alien Tort Statute litigation, State solutions such as Benefit Corporations and Flexible Purpose Corporations. Students will be evaluated on the basis of a series of short papers, drafting exercises, and presentations.
