The High Tech Law Institute and the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics are pleased to host Dr. Charles Binkley, Director of Bioethics program at the Markkula Center, for a conversation discussing AI/ML for Clinical Decision Making.
The deployment of AI/ML clinical decision support tools into various medical specialties raises multiple ethical concerns, one of which is whether patients should be informed when these tools are used to make a diagnosis or prescribe a treatment. This presentation will examine the existing ethical and legal requirements for informing patients and apply them to AI/ML systems used for clinical decision making.
Dr. Charles Binkley is an experienced cancer surgeon, bioethicist, and physician leader. Dr. Binkley attended Georgetown University School of Medicine and completed his surgery training at the University of Michigan where he was awarded an NIH fellowship in pancreatic cancer research. Prior to joining the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics he practiced liver and pancreas cancer surgery and directed the clinical ethics consultation service at Kaiser Permanente in San Francisco, California. His work is focused on AI clinical decision support systems, particularly the need to inform patients, shared machine-physician agency, and assigning moral responsibility for AI guided clinical decisions. He also directs the Health Care Ethics Internship and Honzel Fellowship in Health Care Ethics at Santa Clara University.
This event is part of the IT, Ethics, and Law lecture series, co-sponsored by the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics and the High Tech Law Institute.
