The Inequality of the 19th Amendment

October 29, 2020 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Santa Clara Law’s Women and Law Association, Black Law Students Association, and ACLU NorCal Chapters will be hosting a panel focusing on the Inequality of the 19th Amendment. Even though August 26th marked the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment which gave women the right to vote, the date should not be celebrated as Equality Day. Black women were kept from the voting boxes for decades due to discriminatory practices and racist Jim Crow laws, Latinx women and others faced language discrimination, and Asian immigrant women and Native American women were not considered citizens so they too were denied the right to vote. The 19th Amendment predominantly enabled White women to vote while perpetuating the exclusion of women of color from the polls. This panel will discuss:

  1. The history of the 19th Amendment and the efforts of women suffragists of color
  2. The persisting existence of racial inequality in voting in today’s political climate
  3. The importance of voting
  4. A call to utilize our right to vote in this upcoming election

This panel will be moderated by Santa Clara Law Professor Sue Guan.

Panelists include:

  • Adena Ishii: The Past President of The League of Women Voters of Berkeley Albany, and Emeryville; current liaison to the California State Equity Task Force; and Santa Clara Law student
  • Maricela Guitierrez: Executive Director of SIREN
  • Elizabeth Kamya: Executive Committee Member of San Jose/Silicon Valley NAACP, Delegate of the South Bay Labor Council, Representative/Organizer at IFPTE Local 21, AFL-CIO; SCU Alum
  • Professor Margalynne Armstrong: Santa Clara Law Professor specializing in Constitutional Law and Race and Racism in the Law
  • Kaya Herron: Director of Community Engagement and Advocacy of the Fresno Metro Black Chamber of Commerce
