This Fall, Santa Clara Law will welcome three new members to its faculty: Sue Guan, Nicholas Serafin, and Mary Procaccio Flowers JD ’12. “We are proud to welcome these three new faculty members. With their varied and unique fields of expertise, they each add greater depth and diversity to our existing group of teaching scholars,” said Interim Dean Anna Han.
Sue Guan’s primary research interests are financial markets, securities regulation, corporate law, and contracts. A 2012 graduate of Yale Law School, she was in private practice at Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton in New York before coming to Columbia in 2018. While at Cleary, she focused on complex commercial matters, including multiple benchmark-related antitrust class actions. She also represented pro bono a class of detainees at Rikers Island in a Section 1983 lawsuit. From 2012-13, she clerked for the Honorable Carlos F. Lucero on the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals. At Santa Clara Law, Guan will teach contracts and other courses.
“We look forward to having Sue join the faculty and bringing her practical experience as well as her deep knowledge of the workings of capital markets to our school,” said Han.
Nicholas Serafin is also a 2012 graduate of Yale Law School, where he served as an articles editor for the Yale Journal of Human Rights and Development as well as a fellow at the Yale Center for Law and Philosophy. He earned a PhD in moral and political philosophy from the University of Michigan, where he was a finalist for the Charlotte W. Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship award. He works on questions concerning the nature of moral and political equality, especially in relation to constitutional law. His recent article, In Defense of Immutability, is forthcoming in the BYU Law Review. At Santa Clara Law, Serafin will teach torts, constitutional law, and other courses.
“Nick’s teaching and his work on Constitutional Law will bring even more depth and diversity to Santa Clara Law’s cohort of top scholars,” said Han.
Mary Procaccio-Flowers JD ’12 has been an associate with Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati in Palo Alto since 2012. She also served as a judicial law clerk for the US District Court, Northern District of California, and a judicial extern for the Hon. Charley R. Breyer, US District Court, Northern District of California. She earned her JD from Santa Clara Law in 2012 and her BA in integrative biology from UC Berkeley. She joined the Santa Clara Law faculty as an adjunct lecturer in 2019, teaching a course in patent and trade secret litigation. She now joins the full-time faculty and will teach, among other courses, Legal Research, Analysis, and Writing.
“We are glad to welcome Mary to Santa Clara Law, joining our full-time faculty,” said Han. “Our students will benefit from her wisdom, legal expertise, and years of experience in practice.”
