Promoting Safety of Life and Property Through the Open Internet
This timely Webinar is the second in the series convened by Santa Clara University (SCU) School of Law’s High Tech Law Institute on the role of net neutrality to protect public safety.
The D.C. Circuit’s decision in Mozilla v. FCC remanded the FCC’s repeal of net neutrality rules to require the FCC to consider the impact of net neutrality on public safety. The D.C. Circuit recognized that the FCC was founded by Congress to protect safety of life and property through the use of wireless and wired communication, creating a legal duty for the FCC to consider public safety in its decision-making. Mozilla v. FCC cited record comments from Santa Clara University School of Law Professor Catherine Sandoval, the California Public Utilities Commission, and the County of Santa Clara as the basis for ordering this remand. These issues are critical as plans to limit Coronavirus spread depend on Internet access. With comments on the public safety and net neutrality remand due to the FCC by April 20 and reply comments due on May 20, 2020, this timely Webinar provides an important opportunity to discuss the legal issues at the intersection of net neutrality and public safety.
