Claudia Josi is a Swiss-Peruvian lawyer who specializes in international human rights law, humanitarian law and transitional justice issues. She has extensive experience working with civil society and government institutions engaged in post-conflict management in Latin America, Europe and North Africa. She currently works as Senior Program Officer at swisspeace, a Swiss Research Institute, on post-conflict and transitional justice issues, mostly in Latin America and the Caucasus.

At Santa Clara, she teaches International Humanitarian Law and Transitional Justice.

From 2013-2019 she also has coached the Moot Court teams for the Jean Pictet Competition and the Clara Barton Competition, moot courts on international humanitarian law. In both competitions, SCU’s teams have regularly reached finals and semi-finals in the last years.

Until 2019, she also was Director of the Geneva Summer Abroad Program on International Law and Co-Director of the Costa Rica Summer Abroad Program on International Human Rights Law, serving as Interim Managing Director of the Center for Global Law and Policy from 2016-2017.

Before joining Santa Clara, she worked as an attorney at the Inter-American Court of Human Rights in San José, Costa Rica and as independent consultant with a number of international and non governmental organizations. In Peru she worked on behalf of victims of the Fujimori dictatorship who seek reparations and justice for the crimes committed by the state during the armed conflict. She also assisted in the creation of good governance protocols aimed at developing more responsive and participatory public administrations in Bolivia, Peru and Venezuela. Most recently, she worked in Tunisia and Algeria as consultant to local human rights groups and victims organizations within the context of the “Arab Spring”.

She has lectured on human rights, humanitarian law and transitional justice in several universities in the US and abroad, among them Stanford, the Inter American University in Puerto Rico, the World Peace Academy, and the University of Fribourg in Switzerland. Since 2008 serves as the director of the working group on transitional justice of the Latin-American Society for International Law (LASIL).

Claudia has published several articles and book chapters in relation to transitional justice, direct democracy, and the fight against impunity.
