Joseph Frey was exonerated with the help of attorneys at the Wisconsin Innocence Project after spending nearly 20 years in prison for a wrongful conviction. In 1994, Frey was convicted of sexually assaulting a female college student at knifepoint and received a 102-year sentence, despite the fact that the DNA evidence found at the scene of the crime did not match Frey. However, Frey was convicted based on evidence that included jailhouse snitch testimony and faulty eyewitness identification.
Frey’s conviction was overturned based on new DNA evidence that matched a convicted sex offender who went on to sexually assault two sisters ages 12 and 13, and has since died. Frey was released on July 12 and will receive assistance from a transitional housing program in Madison, Wisconsin.
