Professor Jiri Toman participated at the International Conference celebrating 50th anniversary of the 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict, organized by Ministry of Justice of Egypt, UNESCO and ICRC, in Cairo, from February 14 to 16, 2004.
The Conference was attended by high level Egyptian officials, representatives of Arab States, representatives of the General Secretary of the League of Arab States, the International Committee of the Red Cross, UNESCO, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, the Secretariat of Arab Red Crescent and Red Cross Societies, the Egyptian Red Crescent Society and a number of Arab and foreign experts and professors specialized in the field of international humanitarian law and the protection of cultural property.
Around 100 people attended and Professor Toman presented a paper on Institutional Contribution of the 1999 Second Protocol to the Hague Convention. For this, he was presented with a medal by the Egyptian Minister of Justice. The medal is now in the Dean Polden’s office.
The Conference adopted a final declaration encouraging States to inventory, label, and announce their cultural heritage features to protect them from damage. This includes training the military, people at the national, regional and international level, and humanitarian law programs in schools
He has been invited to attend the next conference in March.
