Santa Clara University School of Law is the location for a moderated discussion on the Sudan genocide on November 17, from 12 to 1pm, in Bannan Hall Room 127.
The ongoing humanitarian crisis in Darfur remains one of the international community’s most important global policy priorities. Yet there seems to be no quick political settlement in Darfur, despite international pressure and the magnitude of the human suffering. A new power sharing government in Khartoum has yet to extend the basic tenets of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement for southern Sudan to the Darfur conflict. Join us for a discussion with Independent Member of Canadian Parliament -and Canada’s leading human rights advocate, David Kilgour and the U.S. State Department’s leading policymaker for Sudan, Charles Snyder. Both are active in formulating and implementing U.S. and Canadian responses to the crisis.
David Kilgour, Independent Member of Canadian Parliament, is one of the two longest serving MPs in the current Canadian House of Commons, Chair of the Canadian Chapter of Parliamentarians for Global Action, Canada’s Secretary of State for Asia-Pacific (2002-2003), and Secretary of State for Latin America & Africa (1997-2002).
Charles R. Snyder is the Senior Representative on Sudan, U.S. Department of State. Mr. Synder’s career is extensive, including Acting Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs (2003-2004), Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for African Affairs (2001-2003), acting as policy point person for the Sudan Peace Initiative; Director of the Office of Regional Affairs in the African Bureau (1995-2001); and National Intelligence Officer for Africa, CIA, (1992-1995).
Beth Van Schaack, Professor of Law at Santa Clara University School of law will be moderating a discussion between Mr. Kilgour and Mr. Snyder, following brief individual presentations by the two speakers. The event is open to the public, and all members of the Santa Clara University community are encouraged to attend.
