Santa Clara University School of Law recently received approval from the ABA for the addition of three new summer law study abroad programs.  This summer students may study in Shanghai, Costa Rica and The Hague, in addition to the eight existing programs.

Shanghai expands the existing Hong Kong summer program by allowing students who could previously only do internships in China (both Shanghai and Beijing), to allowing non-Mandarin speaking students to study, in English, “Doing Business in China.”  School of Law Associate Professor Anna Han is directing this program, as she returns to a city where she previously practiced law.

Costa Rica (San Jose) offers students the opportunity not only to study international human rights in Central America, but also to take a Spanish language immersion course simultaneously with the law courses.  The program begins early in the summer, to allow students fluent in Spanish to participate in one of several human rights-related internships.  Coursework and optional workshops are conducted in English.  Professors Beth Van Schaack and Robert Peterson are co-directing this program.

The Hague, in The Netherlands, is a two week program at the beginning of summer, directed by School of law Professor, Gerald Uelmen.  Students participating in this program will observe trials conducted at the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia, where Milosevic is currently being tried.  After observing trial proceedings, students will debrief and study international criminal law and criminal procedure with Professor Uelmen.  The timing of this program allows students to either return for a full summer as summer associates at home, or add on another summer law study abroad program.
