The career of legendary trial lawyer Clarence Darrow inspired thousands to pursue a legal career themselves. More recent aspirants to legal careers, however, are less familiar with this traditional source of inspiration. Every year on March 13, the anniversary of Darrow’s death in 1938, admirers gather at the Chicago lake where his ashes were spread to present a wreath and remember this legal giant. This year, a similar gathering will take place on the campus of Santa Clara University School of Law. Students, faculty, alumni and friends are invited to participate in any and all of the following events:
Noon to 1:00 p.m., Bannan Hall, Room 127 – Clarence Darrow as a Role Model for 21st Century Lawyers
A panel discussion featuring Prof. Yale Kamisar, the Clarence Darrow Professor at the University of Michigan; Prof. Gerald F. Uelmen of Santa Clara University School of Law, and Prof. Emeritus Bud Ogren of Loyola Law School of Los Angeles, who personally knew Clarence Darrow.
1:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. –George Strong Commons Room, Bergin Hall – Clarence Darrow Film Festival & SBA Networking Reception
A networking reception sponsored by the Student Bar Association will take place at 6:00 pm following the continuous showing of classic films portraying Darrow’s role in the "trials of the century," including Inherit the Wind (Loosely based on Scopes trial) and Compulsion (Based on Loeb-Leopold murder case).
7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., – Nobili Hall, Santa Clara University – "Clarence Darrow: The Search for Justice"
Actor Gary Anderson will present his award winning portrayal of Clarence Darrow recounting the highlights of his career.
All of these events will be presented free of charge, sponsored by the Heafey Advocacy Center of Santa Clara University School of Law.
